This is exactly what I tell guys in my book. There are many benefits to a more mundane, indirect opening and it allows a lot of room to continue the interaction.

“One of the best ways I’ve ever been approached by a man happened when I was in New York City at a coffee shop. I was picking up a little oatmeal from the fridge when the guy behind me saw an opportunity. Instead of coming up from behind, which can be unsettling, he approached me from the side, holding an oatmeal as well. He asked, “Hey, have you ever had this before? Do you recommend it? It looks good.” I told him I hadn’t because I wasn’t from around there, and he followed up with, “Where are you from?” That started a natural and easy conversation. It was such a friendly, casual way to strike up a connection—no cheesy pickup lines, just a genuine question about the oatmeal. It also gave him a chance to gauge my vibe, whether I was open to chatting or not. Since I was friendly, the conversation flowed, and there was potential for us to hang out later. I think what made it so great was that I didn’t even realize he was hitting on me at first—it caught me off guard in the best way.”
