OK, here’s an old school type question. With a bit of a twist.

I sort of may (or may not) be interested in this woman and have been considering asking her out. I haven’t yet because she’s my language tutor. I’m 10 years older (I’m 40, she’s 30) so no huge deal.

It’s a bit of a twist because 98% of the interaction has been in Spanish–which I don’t speak–so while I’m trying to convey advanced concepts and ideas, the level of (linguistic) interaction is probably around elementary school level. We actually have a good bit in common about the way we look at the world. I’ve teased/challenged her some, but no serious flirting yet…

My last class is Friday (although I might sign up for others–she’s actually a realy good tutor and I’ve learned a lot). It also hapepns to be her birthday that day–maybe I”ll bring smoething in Not a gift–just something to celebrate. Cookies or something.

I dont’ know if I’ll ask her out or not–maybe. Any tips? If she says no I’ll probably be mildly disappointed but not that much.

I’ve been in tons of situations like this before–usually I end up with the “do you want to get a drink sometime?” routine–sometimes it works but I could use something a bit better.

Well, you know my 5 cents. Tell her where and when you’re going. Tell her why it’s cool. Tell her she should tag along. If she doesn’t want to go, she’ll tell you she’s busy. If she does want to go but is really busy, she’ll suggest another time.

Well, Lee–I didn’t exactly follow your advice since I decided I’d go for broke and ask her out in Spanish. A bit of a weak ask, but whatever…I suggested that we go for drinks after I get back from vacation in the US (I’ll be home for 2 weeks), and asked the best way to get in touch with her. She said “sure, why not?” and gave me her number.

So now I have my tutor’s number and a potential ‘outing’ for drinks coming up. I’m not expecting to much–I’m somewhat interested and my history in these situations is awful. But we’ll see 🙂 I”m not going to call/text before hand because I”ll be in the States.

I may suck at actually dating–but since I’ve been here in Spain I haven’t gotten any rejections yet from asking people out–that’s a good sign I suppose. Now all I need is some effective follow through!
